People who have spent time with Skyrian ponies often refer to them as magical. There is something wild and charismatic about them. On this particular morning, I felt like this one could see into my soul. But it was the olive grove, not me, reflected in his eye.
The Skyros pony is a rare and ancient breed endemic to Greece and rumored to be the same breed depicted on the Parthenon frieze. Today, there are fewer than 300 left worldwide, and they are facing not only a changing economy but also a genetic bottleneck that could put them on the same path as other rare breeds before them: extinction.
Fifty percent of the proceeds from all sales of Skyros pony images will go directly to the Skyros Island Horse Trust, a nonprofit I volunteered at one summer and later profiled for The Christian Science Monitor.
